The Hatha yoga class for beginners helps to increase the flexibility and strength of those that attend. The poses that are in the class are designed to help individuals build strength by holding their own body weight in the various positions. This can be very difficult, especially when beginning because the body is not used to carrying its own weight except when upright on two feet. During the Hatha yoga class for beginners, the students learn to hold their own weight in balancing positions, upside down position, and in positions that use both their hands and their feet to hold them. In this way, the entire body is conditioned through the class and the person becomes stronger.

Increasing the flexibility of the body means that the students become more open in their passageways and the tense muscles and knots that were formerly there are worked out. The relaxation methods taught in the class also help with the overall well being of the individuals in the class, since they are taught to relax all the muscles of the body except for the ones that are being used to hold a pose.
